Project Overview
■Project Date: August 2018
■Project: Beijing Xiaotangshan–Asuwei Sixth Ring Road Access Lighting Project
■Client: Beijing Municipal No. 2 Construction Engineering Co., Ltd.
■Deployment: 4 sets of 30 m mechanical-lowering high mast lighting systems
■Delivery Lead Time: 26 days
This project provided high mast lighting for a Sixth Ring Road access and interchange area in Beijing. The systems were installed to provide centralized illumination for ramps, road junctions, and other large traffic areas.
The open site conditions and 30 m mast height placed higher requirements on structural stability, lighting coverage, site erection, transportation, and long-term maintenance efficiency.
1. Wind Loads in an Open Interchange Area
The interchange site is relatively open with limited surrounding shelter, exposing the high mast structures to significant wind loads.
The 30 m masts therefore required engineering checks based on local wind conditions and installation requirements, including structural strength, deflection, and foundation stability.
2. Maintenance at 30 m Mounting Height
Routine inspection and replacement of luminaires at a 30 m height would normally require aerial work equipment.
For an active interchange environment, road occupation during maintenance can increase traffic management requirements, operating risks, and long-term maintenance costs.
A ground-level maintenance solution was therefore required.
3. Long-Term Outdoor Corrosion Protection
Beijing's outdoor road environment involves low winter temperatures, long-term weather exposure, and potential effects from snow, de-icing salts, and temperature fluctuations.
The mast structures therefore require a durable corrosion-protection system suitable for long-term outdoor service.
4. Transportation and Erection of 30 m Mast Sections
A 30 m high mast cannot normally be transported and installed as a single-piece structure.
The mast therefore requires a multi-section design suitable for factory fabrication, transportation, lifting, and on-site assembly while maintaining structural continuity and installation efficiency.
5. Large-Area Road Lighting Coverage
Interchange ramps and road junctions cover a large area where conventional street lighting poles may not provide efficient centralized illumination.
A high-level multi-luminaire arrangement was required to extend lighting coverage across the interchange area.
The project adopted 4 sets of 30 m mechanical-lowering high mast lighting systems, customized to suit the site conditions, transportation requirements, and long-term maintenance needs.
1. Q355B High Mast Structure
The mast shafts were manufactured from Q355B structural steel.
Structural design was developed according to the project wind environment, mast height, and installation conditions. The 30 m mast structure was engineered with consideration for structural loading, deflection, and foundation stability for long-term operation in an open road environment.
2. Hot-Dip Galvanized Corrosion Protection
The mast structures were hot-dip galvanized to improve long-term corrosion resistance for outdoor road applications in northern climates.
For standard projects, hot-dip galvanizing is carried out in accordance with GB/T 13912, which is modified in relation to ISO 1461. For export projects, galvanizing production and inspection can be performed in accordance with ISO 1461 based on the customer's technical specifications.
3. Multi-Section Mast with Slip-Joint Connections
The 30 m high mast was designed as a multi-section tapered structure to facilitate transportation, lifting, and on-site erection.
Individual mast sections were connected using overlap slip joints, creating a continuous mast structure without exposed intermediate flange-and-bolt connections.
The sections were prefabricated in the factory and transported to site for sequential lifting and slip-joint assembly, making the configuration suitable for 30 m-class high mast projects.
4. Mechanical-Lowering Luminaire Ring
The high mast system was equipped with a mechanical-lowering luminaire ring that can be lowered to ground level for inspection, maintenance, and luminaire replacement.
Compared with a fixed high mast configuration, this design reduces the need for aerial work equipment and minimizes road occupation during maintenance.
5. High-Level Multi-Luminaire Lighting
Multiple luminaires were arranged on the high mast luminaire ring to provide centralized lighting from a 30 m mounting height.
This configuration extends lighting coverage and is suitable for interchange ramps, major road junctions, and other large traffic areas.
6. Factory Prefabrication and Project Delivery
Mast sections, luminaire rings, and mechanical lifting components were prefabricated in the factory to reduce secondary fabrication on site.
All 4 high mast lighting systems were manufactured and delivered within 26 days, supporting the municipal construction schedule.
