The project required a dedicated high-mast lighting system for the canal embankment of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route, one of China’s major national water infrastructure projects.
The installation site is located within the protected canal corridor in Dingzhou, where construction activities and long-term maintenance are subject to strict environmental and safety controls.
The 30 m lowering high-mast system provides lighting for nighttime security patrols, routine maintenance, and emergency response along the canal, supporting safe and continuous operation of the water conveyance infrastructure.
The site presented significantly tighter constraints than conventional municipal or industrial lighting projects.
→Restricted Access in a Water Protection Zone
The canal protection area restricted cranes, aerial work platforms, and routine work at height. Equipment failure, falling components, or heavy-equipment access could introduce additional safety and environmental risks. A conventional fixed high-mast system requiring elevated maintenance was therefore unsuitable.
→High Wind and Low-Temperature Conditions
Seasonal strong winds and cold weather place substantial loads on a 30 m mast and luminaire assembly. Structural strength, deflection control, and overall mast stability were key design considerations.
→Long-Term Durability Requirements
As part of critical water infrastructure, the lighting system required reliable outdoor durability, corrosion protection, structural integrity, and reduced maintenance over an extended service life.
The system was designed around the site’s operational, structural, and environmental constraints.
Ground-Level Maintenance
A raising and lowering luminaire carriage allows inspection, lamp replacement, and routine servicing at ground level. This eliminates the need for aerial work platforms or routine work at height and minimizes heavy-equipment access to the canal embankment.
High-Strength Structural Steel Mast
The mast was fabricated from Q355B structural steel in accordance with GB/T 1591-2018. Q355B provides a 355 MPa strength class and is commonly compared with EN 10025-2 S355JR for international project reference, subject to project-specific material verification. The mast structure was checked for wind loading, stability, and deformation in accordance with GB 50135-2019, Standard for Design of High-Rising Structures.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Corrosion Protection
The mast was protected by hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with GB/T 13912-2020, which aligns with ISO 1461 for steel structures, with minor technical modifications.
For main mast sections with wall thicknesses of 6 mm or greater:
- Average zinc coating thickness: ≥85 μm
- Local minimum coating thickness: ≥70 μm
The corrosion protection system was also specified with reference to the applicable requirements for hydraulic steel structures.
20-Day Full Delivery and Commissioning
Production, transportation, site installation, commissioning, and final handover were completed within 20 days.
The standardized manufacturing process and project-specific installation planning enabled the system to meet the required schedule without compromising structural or corrosion-protection requirements.

The completed system provides reliable lighting for nighttime patrols, routine canal operations, and emergency response while allowing all routine luminaire maintenance to be performed at ground level.
The project delivered four key benefits:
- Ground-level maintenance with no routine work at height
- High structural stability for exposed outdoor conditions
- Hot-dip galvanized corrosion protection for long-term service
- Reduced lifecycle maintenance requirements
The solution is particularly suited to water infrastructure and other controlled-access sites where conventional aerial maintenance is restricted or undesirable.
