Project Overview
Project Date: June 2016
Project: Beijing Fangshan Winery 40 m Mechanical-Lowering High Mast Project
Deployment: 1 × 40 m mechanical-lowering high mast lighting system
Delivery Lead Time: 15 days
This project provided high-level outdoor lighting for a winery estate in Fangshan, Beijing. The 40 m mechanical-lowering high mast was used to provide centralized lighting for the estate grounds, vineyard areas, parking areas, and main access points.
The site is located near a hilly area with relatively open surroundings. The 40 m mast therefore had to address structural safety, large-area lighting coverage, maintenance at height, long-section transportation, and on-site erection requirements.
The project photos show the 40 m mast structure, base and access section, site installation, and luminaire-ring fabrication.
1. Structural Requirements for a 40 m High Mast
A 40 m mast is significantly taller than a conventional roadway lighting pole and is more sensitive to wind loading and structural deflection.
The mast therefore required engineering design and structural checks based on mast height, luminaire-ring load, lighting equipment load, and site wind conditions, with consideration given to structural strength, deflection, and foundation stability.
2. Maintenance at 40 m Mounting Height
Luminaires installed at a 40 m height are difficult to service using conventional fixed high mast systems.
The estate had limited road and working space for large aerial maintenance equipment, making a ground-level maintenance solution preferable.
3. Long-Term Outdoor Corrosion Protection
The high mast is continuously exposed to temperature variation, rain, sunlight, and other outdoor environmental conditions.
A durable corrosion-protection and surface-finishing system was therefore required to reduce long-term corrosion and coating degradation.
4. Transportation and On-Site Erection of a 40 m Mast
A 40 m high mast cannot normally be transported as a single-piece structure.
The mast therefore required a sectional design suitable for factory fabrication, transportation, lifting, and on-site assembly. Dimensional accuracy and connection control were particularly important to ensure efficient site erection.
5. Integration of the Luminaire Ring and Lowering System
The high mast system needed to integrate the luminaire ring, multiple luminaires, lowering mechanism, and related electrical components.
The luminaire-ring structure had to support the lighting equipment while operating reliably with the mechanical lowering system for future maintenance.
6. Tight 15-Day Delivery Schedule
The 40 m system involved multiple production stages, including steel fabrication, forming, welding, sectional mast production, corrosion protection, luminaire-ring assembly, and lowering-system preparation.
The complete system was required to be manufactured and delivered within 15 days.
The project adopted a 40 m mechanical-lowering high mast lighting system to provide centralized lighting across the estate while allowing the luminaire ring to be serviced at ground level.
1. Q355B High Mast Structural Design
The 40 m mast was manufactured from Q355B structural steel.
Engineering design and structural checks were carried out according to mast height, luminaire-ring load, lighting equipment load, and project wind conditions, with consideration given to structural strength, deflection, and foundation stability.
2. Hot-Dip Galvanizing + Outdoor Powder-Coated Protection
The steel mast sections were hot-dip galvanized, with the zinc coating thickness controlled according to project requirements and a typical target of not less than 85 μm.
An outdoor powder-coated finish was then applied to improve corrosion resistance and surface durability under long-term exposure to temperature variation, rain, and sunlight.
3. Multi-Section Tapered Mast with Slip-Joint Connections
The 40 m mast was designed as a multi-section tapered steel structure to facilitate fabrication, transportation, lifting, and on-site erection.
Adjacent mast sections were connected using overlap slip joints, forming a continuous mast structure without exposed intermediate flange-and-bolt connections.
The mast sections were fabricated, surface-treated, and dimensionally controlled at the factory before being transported to site for sequential lifting and slip-joint assembly.
4. Mechanical-Lowering Luminaire Ring for Ground-Level Maintenance
The high mast was equipped with a mechanical-lowering luminaire ring.
The complete luminaire ring can be lowered to ground level for major luminaire inspection, replacement, cleaning, and adjustment, reducing dependence on large aerial work equipment.
This configuration was particularly suitable for the estate site, where access for high-level maintenance equipment was limited.
5. Factory Pre-Assembly of Luminaire Ring and Lowering Components
The luminaire ring, multi-luminaire mounting structure, and major lowering-system components were pre-assembled and function-checked at the factory.
Factory preparation reduced on-site electrical work, structural adjustment, and secondary fabrication.
6. Factory Prefabrication and Fast Delivery
The 40 m mast was manufactured in sections, with the mast sections, luminaire ring, lowering components, and related parts fabricated and prepared separately.
The complete 40 m mechanical-lowering high mast system was manufactured and delivered within 15 days, supporting the project construction schedule.
