Project Overview

Project Date: August 2017

Project Name: Caofeidian Port General Terminal Security & Communication Tower Project

Application: Integrated support structure for port surveillance and wireless communication equipment

Deployment: 1 set of 16m security & communication tower

Delivery Period: 10 days

This project was implemented at Caofeidian Port General Terminal to provide an integrated support structure for security surveillance and communication equipment within the port operation area.

Considering the large open operating area, elevated equipment installation requirements, multi-system equipment integration, and coastal corrosion conditions, the project adopted a 16m integrated security and communication tower solution. The tower supports HD surveillance cameras, wireless communication equipment, and a dual-layer circular equipment platform, enabling video monitoring coverage and communication signal transmission across the port operation area.

The project photos record the equipment platform installation, tower lifting process, and port application environment, demonstrating the complete delivery process from structural design and manufacturing to on-site installation.

Key Project Challenges

▲Challenge 1 | Stable Support for Elevated Equipment under Coastal High Wind Conditions

Caofeidian Port is located near the Bohai Sea. The open terminal area has limited wind barriers and is continuously exposed to coastal winds and gust loads.

The tower top is equipped with a dual-layer circular platform carrying surveillance equipment and wireless communication devices. The increased wind exposure area and concentrated top load create higher requirements for structural stability and equipment support reliability.

→Engineering Response

To address high wind conditions and concentrated equipment loading:

◎The tower was manufactured with Q355B high-strength structural steel and structurally verified according to site-specific wind load conditions;

◎Overall stability and overturning resistance were evaluated to control structural deformation under long-term wind loading;

◎The dual-layer circular platform adopts a separated equipment layout, allowing surveillance and communication devices to be arranged in different installation areas and reducing concentrated top loading;

◎The platform-to-tower connection structure was optimized to maintain equipment stability under long-term wind vibration conditions.

▲Challenge 2 | Long-Term Corrosion Resistance in Marine Salt-Fog Environment

Located near the coastline, the port environment involves high humidity and salt-fog exposure, creating more demanding outdoor operating conditions compared with ordinary inland applications.

Long-term exposure of steel structures in such environments increases corrosion risks and may lead to higher maintenance requirements.

→Engineering Response

To address coastal corrosion conditions:

◎The tower adopts hot-dip galvanizing protection in accordance with GB/T 13912, which is modified based on ISO 1461;

◎The galvanizing thickness is ≥85μm, improving long-term corrosion resistance for outdoor steel structures;

◎Flange connection areas, reinforcing ribs, and welded areas receive complete corrosion protection to reduce potential corrosion weak points;

◎The internal and external walls of the tower are fully hot-dip galvanized to reduce condensation corrosion risks inside the tube structure and decrease future derusting and maintenance frequency at the port.

Challenge 3 | Integrated Installation of Surveillance and Wireless Communication Equipment

Unlike conventional surveillance poles that mainly support cameras, this project required one tower structure to simultaneously carry security surveillance equipment and wireless communication devices.

Different equipment types require different installation orientations, interfaces, and cable routing arrangements, requiring integrated planning of the tower structure.

→Engineering Response

To meet multi-system equipment integration requirements:

◎The dual-layer circular platform separates surveillance and communication equipment installation areas;

◎Multiple equipment mounting brackets and reserved mounting holes were configured according to equipment dimensions, installation directions, and load requirements;

◎Reserved expansion positions allow future installation of additional cameras or communication devices;

◎An internal safety climbing ladder is provided for equipment installation and future maintenance access.

Challenge 4 | Limited Port Construction Window and Fast Deployment Requirement

Port operations require continuous scheduling coordination, and on-site lifting and construction activities must be completed within limited working windows.

The project required minimizing field fabrication work and improving installation efficiency to reduce interference with normal port operations.

→Engineering Response

A factory prefabrication + rapid on-site lifting approach was adopted:

◎The tower structure, equipment platform, and connection components were fully fabricated in the factory;

◎Welding, corrosion protection, structural inspection, and final quality checks were completed before shipment;

◎On-site work was limited to lifting, positioning, structural connection, and foundation fixing;

◎Factory-based prefabrication reduced field construction activities, enabling project manufacturing and delivery within 10 days.

Project Results

One set of 16m security and communication tower was successfully installed at Caofeidian Port General Terminal.

The project achieved:
